To avoid social disgrace, Nirmala is hurriedly married to Totaram, a widowed lawyer nearly twice her age. Totaram has three sons from his previous marriage—Mansaram, Jiyaram, and Siyaram—who are around Nirmala’s age.
Totaram becomes suspicious of Nirmala’s innocent interactions with Mansaram. His growing mistrust leads him to send Mansaram away to a hostel, where the boy falls ill and dies. This tragedy tears the family apart.
Later, Jiyaram runs away and commits suicide, and Siyaram gets misled by a fake holy man. Nirmala gives birth to a daughter but soon dies of grief and illness.
