Pongal

PongalThe Harvest Festival of Tamil Nadu

Pongal is one of the most important and joyful festivals celebrated in Tamil Nadu. It is a harvest festival that marks the beginning of a new agricultural season and thanks nature for giving us food. Celebrated for four days—Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal—the festival brings families together with happiness and gratitude.

On Thai Pongal, people wake up early, clean their homes, and decorate the entrance with colourful kolam. The highlight of the day is cooking the special dish Pongal, made from newly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery. As the pot overflows, people joyfully say “Pongalo Pongal!” as a symbol of prosperity and abundance.

During Mattu Pongal, cows and bulls are honoured for their hard work in farming. They are bathed, decorated with garlands, and worshipped with love and respect. Kaanum Pongal is a day for outings, family gatherings, and visiting friends.

Pongal is more than a festival—it is a celebration of nature, farmers, and the importance of gratitude. It reminds us to appreciate the simple gifts of life and to welcome the new year with hope and positivity.
